2020 Toyota Supra – The Legend of a Japanese Sports Car Back on the Road…
Supra – one of the legendary, high-performance and iconic sports cars that Toyota has ever produced is now back hitting the market. Toyota Motor Corporation first released the Supra in 1978 as a successor of the Toyota 2000GT, but unfortunately the Supra production (fourth-gen A80 Turbo) was stopped for the Japanese domestic market in 2002. Over the years, the Supra enthusiasts have awaited the return of this legendary sports car.
Now, with confidence, enthusiasm, and respect, the Japanese automaker has again brought and reintroduced the fifth-generation 2020 Toyota Supra at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in early January. Of course, this is great news for Supra enthusiats who have long been waiting for the return of this legendary sports car. The return of the new Supra is inseparable from the help and cooperation between Toyota and BMW… it’s definitely!!!
Using the Same Engine Platform as the New 2019 BMW Z4

The 2020 Toyota Supra is mostly based on the Toyota FT-1 concept unveiled in January 2014, as we can see in its luxurious interior and exterior design. The new sports car will come out along with his brother “BMW Z4” from the same assembly plant in Graz, Austria. The fifth-gen Supra A90 is powered by a BMW-sourced B58 turbo and a direct-injected 3.0-liter inline-six engine rated at 335 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. Yeahhh… that’s for sure, this new model will share the same engine platform with the BMW Z4 M40i.
Although there’s room to get more power, modern engines like the BMW Z4 B58 are too restricted by the manufacturer, making it impossible to provide power upgrades like the legendary Supra 2JZ engine. Supra’s chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada, also informed that the new A90 sports car with a four-cylinder engine would also hit the market in the future, according to our sources. And Toyota will pair it to an 8-speed ZF automatic transmission without manual gearbox options.

The 2020 Toyota Supra relies on the BMW Cluster architecture, better known as the CLAR, and almost all mechanical parts come from the German automaker. In addition, the fifth-generation Supra A90 is also equipped with unitized steel stamping components. Aluminum material is used on the hood and door skins, while the composite-based material used for the rear hatch. Supra’s product manager, Ben Haushalter, has confirmed that in terms of the design and style this sports car 100% really has a Toyota taste.
It Utilizes BMW Cluster Architecture…
As for platforms and powertrains coming from BMW, that’s the reason why Toyota partnered with BMW. The 2020 Toyota Supra has a 97.2-inch wheelbase and 5.2-inch shorter compared to the wheelbase of the fourth-gen Supra. As for the overall dimensions, the Supra A90 has a total dimension of 172.5-inches which is 1.8-inches longer than the BMW Z4. Balanced weight distribution is the main focus in the Supra A90 development, which eventually led to the cockpit’s mass being pushed to the rear-axle with the battery located in the cargo space. Overall, this new model has weight of 3397 pounds.

The 2020 Toyota Supra will be available with standard 18-inch wheels wrapped with Michelin Pilot Super Sport summer tires, front wheels measuring 255/35ZR-18, while the rear wheels size is 275/35ZR-18. In addition, there are also 19-inch alloy wheels that will come as optional packages, as well as Adaptive Dampers as standard features.
Although this is a completely new model, the old-school Supra taste is also still reflected in the fifth-gen 2020 Supra A90 like the front-fenders design, headlights and F1-style hood in the center section. Toyota offers several standard color choices on the new A90, including red, blue, silver, white and black. Meanwhile, the buyer must pay an extra $400 for yellow color, and the matte gray will be available as optional with an extra $1200.

Looking inside the interior, the all-new 2020 Toyota Supra is now adopting a BMW-based infotainment system with the optional 8.8-inch center screen but with newly Toyota graphics. There are several standard features offered at base 3.0 trim levels including smaller 6.5-inch display, rain-sensing wipers, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

For an extra $4000, buyers can get a 3.0 Premium trim level that provides additional features such as a larger screen with Apple CarPlay compatibility, heated leather seats and navigation system. However, the JBL premium audio system and some active safety features are only available as optional equipment.
Pricing Info and Release Date…
Now talking about the release date, the 2020 Toyota Supra is scheduled to hit the U.S. showrooms in the middle of this year with starting prices at $50,920. Given that the German automaker have borne more development burdens, of course, the new 2019 BMW Z4 will arrive first on the dealer floor this summer, followed by the Supra A90 behind it.
