It’s impossible for Ford to keep quiet and relax while its competitors are seriously building the 717-HP SRT Hellcat and 650-HP Camaro ZL1. It also doesn’t make sense for the Blue Oval Company to offer a pony car with less power than its main competitor? That’s right… Ford, however, needs to provide the best all the best for the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 in terms of power output compared to the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and Chevy Camaro ZL1.

We’re waiting for that… but yes, and Ford has brought new superior fighter jets in the Horsepower War…!! The Dearborn manufacturer promises 700-plus horsepower for the 2020 Shelby GT500, but unfortunately they did not reveal the exact official performance numbers until this car was released this summer. Let’s see the Ford GT, the Le Mans 24 Hours champion, only offers 647 horsepower. Meanwhile the McLaren 720S makes 700 horsepower, but in the end it was 17 HP lower than Hellcat. Also the Porsche 911 Turbo S has only 580 horsepower.
The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter DOHC V8 engine under its hood, which is rumored to make 720 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. This 5.2L V8 engine is basically derived from the naturally-aspirated Shelby GT350 engine, but it has a number of important modifications and there are some differences too, of course.
The V8 Flat-Plane Crankshaft Gives The Most Exotic Engine Sound
According to Ford, some of the differences include the cylinder-heads with a new, longer bolt, additional cooling parts, as well as new gasket and seals. Modifications made to the cylinder-heads are intended to handle additional heat and pressure. The 5.2-liter “Voodoo” V8 engine found on the Ford Shelby GT350 is very unique, thanks to the lighter flat-plane crankshaft. The V8 flat-plane is claimed to have a different firing sequence compared to the conventional cross-planes crankshaft, which ultimately produces the most exotic engine sound.
Ed Krenz, Ford Performance Chief Engineer, revealed that the new supercharged GT500 V8 engine without a dry-sump system is now equipped with a new cast-aluminum structural oil pan combined with static baffles and hinged doors, where it can close and open under high g-force pressures in order to minimize oil starvation. Not only that, the 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 is now powered by a new cooling part which includes a new radiator, transmission-oil cooler, engine-oil cooler, and air-to-liquid intercooler mounted on the top of the supercharger. It’s claimed to be able to keep the engine happy on long straight tracks.

It’s Powered by TREMEC Dual-Clutch Gearbox
For the first time in the Mustang product lineup, the all-new Shelby GT500 is equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox derived from TREMEC, which is well-known as the North American manufacturer of high-performance automobile transmissions and drivetrain components. The dual-clutch setup is claimed to have higher torque handling capabilities and can shift much quicker than an automatic torque-converter.
Meanwhile, the TREMEC dual-clutch gearbox is claimed to be able to shift in only about 10 seconds, equivalent to the Porsche PDK gearbox and it’s also claimed to be twice as fast as ZL1’s 10-speed automatic transmission. That’s why Ford Performance dropped the choice on the dual-clutch transmission for the 2020 Shelby GT500. Ford still considers the manual transmission option if there’s market demand in the future, even though currently manual transmission is not yet available at Shelby GT500.
No Torque Interruption in Drag Mode with TREMEC Dual-Clutch
There’re several different responses to the car that are produced by the dual-clutch gearbox and that depends entirely on the selected driving mode. In Drag mode for example, the TREMEC dual-clutch is able to shift without the torque interruption at all. While the steering angle is taken over when the driver activates the Track mode in order to prevent sudden shifts that can make the car unstable. But it can still be controlled by the driver through magnesium shift paddles, or can be left in automatic mode.
The dual-clutch software consists of launch control and line-lock features. While power is routed backwards to the Torsen limited-slip rear differential via carbon-fiber driveshaft with 3.73:1 gears. Then the power generated out to the wheels via a beefed-up half-shafts and CV joints. The exhaust system is equipped with four tailpipes with a diameter of 5-inch thickness, respectively.
Based on the Shelby GT350 Great Handling
The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is based on the GT350 with its good handling, and still uses the same basic MacPherson strut front suspension, as well as multilink rear suspensions derived from the current Shelby GT350. The Dearborn manufacturer has also revised geometry for the GT500 front suspension in order to reduce tramlining previously found on the Ford Shelby GT350. In addition, the GT500 front suspension is equipped with upgraded magnetorheological dampers, fatter anti-roll bars, and stiffer springs.
Compared to the Shelby GT350, the new Mustang GT500 has a greater mass thanks to the improved stiffness. The high-performance Shelby GT500 comes with standard 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires measuring 305/30ZR-20 for the front tires and 315/30ZR-20 for the rear tires. As for the optional package, Ford offers a Carbon Fiber Track package on the GT500 and it’s equipped with carbon-fiber wheels wrapped in the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 track tires, complete with adjustable carbon-fiber wing, dive planes up front, and rear-seat delete.

This car adopts a strut-tower brace made from elaborate magnesium latticework, while its standard 20-inch alloy wheels have aluminum brake rotors with 2-piece iron. The front rotor is powered by a 16.5-inch six-piston Brembo caliper, and a 14.6-inch four-piston caliper for the rear rotor. The Ford Shelby GT500 looks very different from the GT350 from the A-pillar forward and almost everything is new. However, the A-pillar rearward is slightly different from the Ford Shelby GT350. While the front fender is 0.4 inches wider on each side, providing additional space for the front rubber and this is claimed to have been made from sheet molding compound material (SMC).
According to the automaker, the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 can sprint from 0-60 mph in just mid-three-second, and the quarter-mile can be reached in less than 11 seconds, which is half second faster than the Chevy Camaro ZL1. So, in terms of performance parameters, the all-new Ford Shelby GT500 should be able to beat the 717-HP Challenger SRT Hellcat.
2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Price and Release Date
Ford has not yet announced the official pricing details for the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, but this high-performance car is scheduled to go on sale at the U.S. dealers in late 2019 or this fall. The estimated starting price for the new GT500 is around $70,000, considering that the Shelby GT350 is currently being sold at dealers in a price range of $60,000. As for the official release date, the new Ford Shelby GT500 has been released for the first time at the Detroit Motor Show back in January.
