2018 Honda S2000 Price, Release Date and Specs

The Honda S2000 was first introduced as a concept car at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show. It’s well known as Honda Sport Study Model (SSM), which relies on rear-wheel-drive platform, front mid-engine layout (FMR) and powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder DOHC VTEC engine. As a roadster and sports cars, the Honda S2000 concept is equipped with a highly rigid X-bone chassis and aluminum body panels, which promises to improve vehicle stiffness and collision safety. Having exhibited at many auto shows for several years, the Japanese automaker finally decided to bring S2000 to the production line for the first time in April 1999, which coincides with Honda’s 50th anniversary.

This sports car gets a lot of changes and revisions throughout its life span. The most important thing is revision to the engine spec, transmission and its suspension. In addition, the exterior and interior design is also getting many changes. Unfortunately, Honda decided to discontinue production of the S2000 roadster in 2009. According to some automotive experts, this is due to the S2000 sale, which has fallen dramatically since 2006. Especially after the financial crisis that hit the automotive industry in 2008, which makes the S2000 sales dropped significantly and only around 2,538 units were sold in the United States at that time.

Now 20 years after the first appearance of the S2000, Honda will reportedly bring back the iconic S2000 roadster as a 2018 model year. Since the smallest Honda S660 roadster is not sold in the United States, of course, this new sports car will likely be positioned below the Acura NSX and above the S660 two-seat sports car. The Japanese automaker hinted that the next-generation 2018 Honda S2000 would be similar to the Mazda MX-5 Miata, including in terms of its size. However, in terms of power, the new S2000 will be more powerful than the Mazda MX-5. We guess the reborn S2000 will be introduced in the celebration of Honda’s 70th anniversary, considering that the first-generation Honda S2000 was introduced in 1998 to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary.

Now let’s talk about specifications. Our source informed that the 2018 Honda S2000 would never use a 2.0-liter VTEC turbocharged engine that comes from the current Civic Type R. It’s old news, our source said. Although the Type R’s 2.0-liter turbo is a great engine, but Honda had no such plans. Since this is an all-new sports car and Honda says it must be special. So the next-gen S2000 roadster will certainly bring a new engine and chassis. Also, the new S2000 should be a unique sports car in its class, considering it might be a special gift for Honda’s 70th anniversary along with the roadgoing version of the Honda RC213V-S.

The all-new 2018 Honda S2000 is likely to adopt a similar technology with Mitsubishi. It’s called a two-stage electric boosting system, which is claimed to be more fuel-efficient, lightweight, and has a compact design compared to the twin-turbo engine. In addition, there will be almost no turbo lag, so the driver will get better throttle response than the turbo engine. While the car’s weight will not exceed 2900 pounds. Looking at the Mitsubishi technology, the two-stage electric boosting system consists of several components such as conventional turbocharger, electric supercharger and bypass valve.

Honda is almost impossible to steal technology from Mitsubishi. However, Honda is rumored to be offering a similar system design like Mitsubishi technology. Well, the 2018 Honda S2000 roadster will be powered by a longitudinally mounted 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine with a peak output of more than 320 horsepower. In order to optimize the weight distribution, this sports car will also be equipped with 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. So it’s quite interesting to see how the next-gen S2000 dealing with the MX-5 Miata.

Nevertheless, we expect to see a new S2000 concept at the auto show this year.
