Spread the love
Ford Motor Company makes a big surprise by introducing the 2018 F-150 full-size pickup trucks at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS 2017) this week. In fact it’s quite surprising the new F-150 carrying a PowerStroke Diesel engine for the first time. Of course, this is a diesel engine that has been long-awaited by the F-150 enthusiasts after rumors and speculation emerged over the years. There are not much design changes on the 2018 Ford F-150 which still relies on its aluminum body style. However, it appears there are many exterior updates on all F-150 lineups like the grille, headlights, taillights, tailgate and bumper. Additionally, the best-selling F-150 pickup truck also gets a redesign in its interior.
Exterior and Interior Design Changes
The most striking change is a twin-bar design that stretches at the front end of the truck, which seemed to make the appearance looks more spacious and much like the Ford Super Duty. While the new grille design has a different look on some trim levels such as chrome touch that can only be found on the Limited trim level. The new headlight units, however, will be offered in two different versions with LED lighting will only be available in the top trim level. Buyers will get a choice of six new wheels with several different sizes ranging from 17 to 22 inches. As for buyers who choose the 2018 Ford F-150 Lariat with a sport package will receive body-color treatment and the F-150 logo on the rear end.
Inside the cabin, there are some interior changes that could be found, including new color options for seat and several new technology features. The 2018 F-150 Limited will be available with a choice of Navy Pier color theme, while the Platinum trim will come with Marsala Dark hue. The XLT Sport and Lariat Sport trims will receive a touch of carbon fiber appliqués. Meanwhile, buyers who choose the F-150 King Ranch will get interior with new seats named Kingsville.
Furthermore, the infotainment system is also more refined. There is a new 4G LTE WI-Fi, which eventually offered in the 2018 Ford F-150 and can connect up to 10 wireless devices. Ford will also offer a Bang & Olufsen audio system, as well as SYNC 3 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As for safety systems, Ford has improved Adaptive Cruise Control which allows the F-150 to completely stop in heavy traffic conditions. In addition, the Detroit automaker will install a new pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, 360-degree camera and blind-spot monitoring.
2018 Ford F-150 Engine Specs: Available new PowerStroke Diesel unit
Ford has provided many new powertrain options on the 2018 F-150 pickup trucks, including the most anticipated turbodiesel engine. And of course, auto stop-start will become a standard feature on all engine options. What we know is the new 3.0-liter PowerStroke diesel V6 engine capable of delivering up to 254 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. It’s claimed to be lighter and more efficient engines, as well as will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
However, this new diesel powertrain seems to be based on the 3.0-liter Lion turbodiesel V6 engine which today is also used by some Range Rovers models. The 2018 F-150 PowerStroke Diesel units should be able to beat the fuel economy of the 2017 Ram 1500 Eco-Diesel V6, which is currently rated at 29 mpg on the highway. Also, the new diesel engine is claimed to be more efficient than the previous 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine that is rated at 26 mpg on the highway.
This engine is actually the result of a joint development between Ford with PSA Peugeot Citroën last year. Nevertheless, this diesel engine will not be available when the F-150 landed at the US dealers floor this fall. So buyers are required to wait longer at least until summer 2018. Apart from the diesel powertrain, the 2018 Ford F-150 will also come with an all-new 3.3-liter direct-injection V6 engine that will be paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The total output is expected to reach at 282 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque, but it’s claimed to be more efficient than the previous engine. That’s why this new engine will replace the current 3.5-liter V6 engine.
As for the next powertrain, the 2018 Ford F-150 will also be powered by an all-new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine with more power but would be more efficient in terms of fuel economy. Thanks to several important upgrades and adoption of new technologies such as advanced dual port and direct-injection. As we know that the previous 2.7L EcoBoost unit is only equipped with direct-injection technology. Like the 3.0L PowerStroke diesel engine, the second-gen 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine will also be paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
However, if the above engine options are less attractive to you, you can however choose the 5.0-liter V8 engine has also received a number of revisions for the 2018 model year. The 5.0L V8 F-150 units have been utilizing spray bore cylinder liners like the Mustang 5.0L engine. The result is a 5.0L V8 engine capable of delivering more power and torque as claimed by Ford, but has less weight than the previous generation engine. Unfortunately, Ford still hide the performance figures for the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 and a 5.0-liter V8 engines.
