The Chevy El Camino was first introduced in 1959 to fill the coupe utility pickup segment with front engine and rear-wheel drive layout. This is GM’s response to Ford, who successfully selling Ranchero pickup in the North American market at that time. However, Ford Australia became the first automaker to introduce the coupe utility vehicle in order to respond to buyer demand against a multipurpose vehicle, which can be used to go to church on Sundays and can transport the pigs to the market on Mondays. That’s why in the American market, the Ford Ranchero was released two years earlier than the Chevy El Camino. Because the 1957 Ranchero model year is the pioneer of a coupe utility vehicle.
There’s no official information from GM. But we have some leaked information from our reliable source. After its production halted for years, now General Motors has been rumored to be reviving the Chevrolet El Camino, which will be presented as a 2018 model year in North America. What we do know that the 2018 Chevy El Camino will most likely be based on the latest generation Holden Commodore Ute which today being sold in the Australian market. It was not surprising because Holden is a subsidiary of General Motors, too, like Chevrolet.
2018 Chevy El Camino Concept
We don’t know for sure whether the next-generation 2018 Chevy El Camino SS was just a rebadged version of the Holden Ute. Or it will be many differences compared to its siblings? We’re not sure about that. However, clearly we know that the Holden Commodore Ute is coupe utility pickups that are based on the Chevrolet Lumina Ute. Currently, the Lumina Ute being sold in the Middle East and South African markets.
The 2010 Pontiac G8 ST concept is the only coupe utility/pickup vehicle, which is rumored to utilize a body style and design language of the El Camino. This concept car was introduced at the New York Auto Show in March 2008. Unfortunately, it never reached the production line until now. The Pontiac G8 ST was mostly based on the Holden Ute and riding on GM’s Zeta platform (GM-G8). This Sport Truck is powered by a 6.0-liter V8 engine with a peak output of 361 horsepower. In addition, there’s also a direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 engine capable of delivering at least 300 horsepower.
The Pontiac G8 ST was originally scheduled to be sold in North American dealerships around the year 2010. It’s expected to become the first coupe utility vehicles in the United States after Chevrolet decided to stop production of the El Camino in 1987. Unfortunately, in January 2009, General Motors has announced that they will not bring the Pontiac G8 ST to the production line due to budget issues. Then in 2011, GM re-promises and considers it again to release a Chevy El Camino before 2015. But it has never been proved until now. So maybe this is just nonsense.
