The Camaro ZL1 has begun to build a good reputation as a muscle car of the Chevrolet Camaro lineup since it was first launched in 2012. The most important thing is that today’s 2017 Camaro ZL1 is more focused on track performance. However, now General Motors surprises by revealing the 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE on the Daytona International Speedway ahead of the Daytona 500 event some time ago. The new Camaro ZL1 1LE is basically a perfect combination of the current ZL1 model and the last-generation Chevy Camaro Z/28. It’s also considered a successor for the supercharged Camaro Z/28.
The 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE has become the fastest Camaro ever on the German track and is able to lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife (“north loop”) in just 7:16.04 (12,9-mile / 20,8 km). This is a new record on the Nürburgring circuit that makes the ZL1 1LE 13,56 seconds faster than the current Camaro ZL1 with a 10-speed automatic transmission. As the Camaro chief engineer, Al Oppenheiser says that the new Camaro ZL1 1LE is capable of challenging supercars from around the world regardless of the drive system, pricing and configuration. This car has an adjustable chassis unlike any other supercar in its class. The result is a dramatic improvement, the ZL1 1LE can record lap time of more than one second per mile at the Nürburgring circuit than the Camaro ZL1 which is currently powered by 10-speed automatic transmission.
2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE Specs
Under its hood, the 1LE powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission that is capable of delivering 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. This engine is basically the same as used by the standard Camaro ZL1, but wrapped with extreme track performance package. In addition, the car is also powered by racing-based components, including adjustable Multimatic DSSV® front suspension (Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve), rear dampers, carbon-fiber rear wing and special front dive planes. The Camaro ZL1 1LE uses the exclusive new Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R tire as the company’s first cup tire design, and this tire is specially developed for the 1LE variant.
Meanwhile, Multimatic DSSV spool-valve suspension has adjustable ride height, solid-mounted front struts, adjustable camber plates, hard-mounted rear cradle and adjustable rear anti-roll bar. This suspension has made its first debut on the supercharged Z/28, and recently also offered on the Colorado ZR2. Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve provides a weight savings of around 60 pounds than the standard ZL1 suspension with magnetorheological shocks. Another major improvement on its aerodynamic system, where the ZL1 1LE is equipped with carbon-fiber rear wing, air deflectors, special front dive planes and new front splitter. It has also better cooling thanks to a larger front grille design, as well as a new supercharger lid.
