Buick has long been rumored to bring the next-generation Regal with more premium design in several versions such as Regal Wagon, Gran Sport (GS) and Coupe. This rumor seems to be true since the 2017 Opel Insignia Grand Sport has been officially revealed in Europe some time ago. Interestingly the second-generation Opel Insignia brings a new name called “Grand Sport” which is one of the Buick great names. Now we will see a similar car will be sold in North American dealerships in the next few months but with a different name and same design. Of course, picture you see here is the 2018 Buick Regal with five seats and five doors!
The new Buick Regal has a charming appearance, more premium and more luxurious design with high-quality spacious cabin. In fact it’s claimed to bring upscale design that combines flowing lines with a smooth surface design and dramatic proportions. The new model also features new IntelliLux LED matrix lighting. While the weight has been reduced significantly thanks to the new chassis. Also, the interior becomes more spacious compared to the current Regal models. However, the car is basically inspired by the Opel Monza concept that debuted at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Based on GM’s New Platform “Epsilon 2”
The 2018 Buick Regal is based on GM’s new platform called Epsilon 2 or sometimes called E2 platform, which is now also used by the Chevy Malibu. As a result, the new Regal will be 175 kg lighter than the previous model and cabin is now more spacious. The car is getting an overall weight reduction, while the length increases by 55 mm which makes similar in size to the BMW 5 Series. In order to provide a more spacious cabin, the wheelbase has been increased by 92 mm but height of the car is reduced by approximately 29 mm. So the seating position will be lower.
In addition to a spacious cabin, Buick also offers better quality interior materials and dashboard with a new layout. There are some interesting interior features offered such as a touchscreen with GM IntelliLink system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto Smartphone Mirroring, Wifi hotspot, wireless charging, AGR premium seats and heated front/rear seat. The five-door 2018 Regal is also equipped with several safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, cross-traffic alert head-up display and 360-degree camera.
2018 Buick Regal Specifications
There is no official announcement about engine specifications but we have some leaked information. Under its hood, the 2018 Buick Regal GS will likely be powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of delivering 247 horsepower. The 2.0-liter turbo unit is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and Intelligent all-wheel drive system with GKN drivetrain, which is the same technology used on the Ford Focus RS. Interestingly the new Regal will also be equipped with torque vectoring system for the first time.

In the European market, the 2017 Insignia Grand Sport will offer a new 1.5-liter gasoline engine with six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive system as standard. Output is claimed to reach 163 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Development of the new 1.5-liter engine is based on 1.4-liter turbocharged unit previously found in the Opel Astra. In addition, there are other options that include a 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter engine with more than 110 horsepower output. But we don’t know for sure whether the last three engines will be offered in North America as well. Expect the 2018 Buick Regal Wagon will bring a new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with 163 horsepower in the United States.
The upcoming Regal will be equipped with MacPherson struts front suspension and five-link rear suspension with adaptive dampers. The driver can select three different modes thanks to the adaptive FlexRide chassis, including Standard, Sport and Tour. This mode allows the car to suit the driving style such as changing stiffness of the suspension and throttle response.
2018 Buick Regal Release Date and Price
Release date for the 2018 Buick Regal Wagon and Regal GS is still unconfirmed. However, the new Regal is expected to be officially released in the United States in late 2017. While the European market will get it first and this has been confirmed that the new Opel Insignia Grand Sport will go on sale next June in Europe. Prices for the 2018 Buick Regal is estimated at around $30,000 for the Wagon body styles and $35,000 for the new Regal GS Turbo. Meanwhile, price tag for the new Regal Sedan and base model is expected not much different from the current model, probably around $28,500.
In the United States, the 2018 Buick Regal will have several competitors that include BMW 3-Series Wagon, Volvo V60, Audi A4 Allroad Quattro, Subaru Outback Wagon, Lincoln MKZ, Lexus ES and Acura TLX. This car will be on display again at the Geneva Motor Show next year.
