The German automaker Audi is now preparing the next-generation A6 mid-size sedan with an evolutionary design. The new model is claimed to have similar user interface with the new A8 luxury sedan. In the Audi sedan lineup, the A6 is considered as an important product for the Audi brand because it provides a higher profit for the company than the A3 and A4. Moreover, the Audi A6 is in great demand in Europe, United States and China.
The 2018 Audi A6 is rumored to be riding on a new very flexible platform and featuring many of the latest tech features. This is a Audi MLB Evo modular-longitudinal platform that will also be used by the upcoming A8 and A7 sedans. The new platform allows Audi to offer AWD and FWD systems on the next A6 sedan, as well as make its weight about 100 kg lighter. In addition, the fifth-generation A6 sedan will borrow a lot of design language from the new Audi A4. So the next A6 is expected to offer a slim design, refreshed styling, twin touch screens, as well as updated technology.
The current model is nearing the end of its productive life that should soon be replaced with a new model. The next-generation model is claimed to be getting a lot of major design changes. Well based on the spy shots photo, the new Audi A6 will have a sharper design line with dynamic profile and extra folds on the hood. The car will also be equipped with new daytime running light, bright chrome strip on the rear end, wide blistered wheelarches and strong creases.
2018 Audi A6 Specs
Under its hood, the 2018 Audi A6 will be offered in several engine options when it hit the US dealer floor. The entry-level model will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, followed by a turbocharged V6 engine available as an optional. There is also a choice of 2.0-liter diesel engine, which is offered both for European and US markets. The engine will be paired to a Quattro all-wheel drive system, and power will be transferred through seven-speed automatic or eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. There are no data regarding power output and torque released by Audi at the moment, but this mid-size sedan will also be available in plug-in hybrid e-tron variant in the US.
The upcoming A6 sedan will be the first Audi model powered by a 48-volt electrical and turbocharged electric system, thanks to the new MLB Evo modular platform. This turbo electric technology may also be applied to the 2.0-liter diesel engine, which in turn can provide additional performance and fuel economy improvements. The 48-volt electronic system will also be powered by new autonomous technology, piloted driving tech with clock-traffic that will give full control to the car. This allows the car to change the speed and insert the steering independently to a speed of 37 mph.
Inside the cabin, the 2018 Audi A6 will come with a new cabin architecture that is entirely different from the current model. The new model has also switched to scroll-wheel driven Audi MMI system and has left all its traditional buttons. While the cabin is controlled by two screens that are integrated into the center console, and for the first time will present new haptic touchscreens. The interior is wrapped with premium touch and technology upgrades on its multimedia system.
2018 Audi A6 Release Date and Price
As for the release date, the next-generation 2018 Audi A6 is scheduled to be released this fall in the US market. The new model will compete with some of its competitors in the executive car market which includes New BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Cadillac CTS, Lexus GS, Jaguar XF and Maserati Ghibli. While the price tag will not be much different from the current model that starts at around $50,000. The new Audi A6 will come in several variants including the sedan, Avant/Allroad, and long-wheelbase sedan for Chinese market.
