The all-new 2015 MINI Cooper has made its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show last month and now its convertible version undergoing testing in prototype form. The third-gen Cooper Convertible will get some changes in terms of design compared to the previous generation, including redesign and revision.
However, some reports indicate that the convertible model will have a similar design styling with the regular Cooper hatchback, with the exception of its folding fabric roof. Spy shots photos posted on several sites on the internet such as Motorauthority and Worldcarfans also shows that there’s little difference between the standard and convertible version.
Meanwhile, engine lineup will likely be the same as the regular model and transmission choices will include a standard six-speed manual and optional six-speed automatic gearbox. The base 2015 MINI Cooper Convertible is expected to be powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, peak output can reach up to 136 horsepower and 220 Nm of torque (230 Nm with overboost).
As we’ve review in a previous article that this new three-cylinder gasoline engine will take 7.9 seconds to sprint from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) and a top speed reaches 210 km/h. In addition to the gasoline version, MINI also offers a 1.5-liter turbo-diesel engine with the same three-cylinder setup in the European market. Maximum output for the turbo-diesel engine is rated at 116 horsepower and 270 Nm of torque, this engine will be available for the Cooper D Convertible.

A more powerful gasoline version is offered on the new Cooper S Convertible, which will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine capable of developing up to 192 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque (300 Nm with overboost). MINI claims that the 2.0L turbocharged unit in the Cooper S hatchback can accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in just 6.8 seconds and top speed is limited to 235 km/h.
As for the safety features, this new model will come with some new safety features which includes parking assistant, collision warning system, pedestrian warning system, speed-limit information system, backup camera and head-up display. Some other standard features are likely to be borrowed from the regular Cooper models.
2015 MINI Cooper Convertible Release Date scheduled for next fall
Speaking about the launch schedule, release date for the 2015 MINI Cooper Convertible will most likely be scheduled for next fall and will hit U.S. dealerships as 2015 model year. So, this release schedule indicates that the convertible model will not be launched at the same time with the new Cooper hatchback in March 2014.
MINI still sealed information about the official pricing details for the convertible models. But as a reminder, the base 2015 MINI Cooper goes on sale in UK dealerships with a starting price of £15,300 (GBP), followed by the entry-level Cooper D models with a price tag of £16,450 (GBP).
