Hatchback Mazda New Cars

2015 Mazda2 Release Date, Specs and Price

First of all let’s look at history. The first-generation Mazda Demio has hit the Japanese domestic market for the first time in 1996, replacing the Mazda Autozam Revue which ended its sales in the Japanese market since June 1998. These subcompact hatchbacks generally use Mazda2 nameplate in the global markets, previously sold as the Mazda Metro and Ford Festiva Mini Wagon.

In 2002, the Hiroshima-based automaker introduced the second-generation Mazda2 five-door hatchback and is based on Mazda’s DY platform. This supermini car still uses the Demio nameplate in the Japanese domestic market, although it uses the Mazda2 nameplate in some markets. Mazda discontinue production of its second-generation supermini model in 2007.

Based on a new Mazda DE platform, the supermini car is marketed in three different body styles, including a three-door hatchback, five-door hatchback and four-door sedan. Mazda DE platform was also used in the 2008 Ford Fiesta.

After the third-generation model was marketed for seven years, this supermini car certainly needs major changes and a full redesign. Now for the next model year, Mazda has officially unveiled the all-new 2015 Mazda2 hatchback that is based on Hazumi concept, seen at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Exterior and Interior Design

The fourth-generation Mazda2 brings KODO design language (Soul of Motion), which is also seen in the Mazda6 sedan and Mazda3 hatchback. Thanks to the Kodo design language, the new model really looks interesting and its exterior design is almost the same as the 2014 Hazumi concept. Overall, the 2015 Mazda2 has a lot of similarities in terms of design with its siblings, including the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3.

The resemblance is not only found on its exterior design, but also in the interior. The latest Mazda2 interior has a simple and clean layout, as well as very spacious and refined. In fact it looks quite similar to the Mazda6 and Mazda3.

The new Mazda2 will feature MZD Connect in-car connectivity system, SKYACTIV body and chassis, as well as i-ACTIVSENSE active safety technology. According to the Japanese automaker, the 2015 model year is expected to increase their sales in the B-segment in the European market.

Engine Specs, Horsepower, Torque and Technology

Under its hood, the all-new 2015 Mazda2 aka Demio will be powered by a newly-developed 1.5-liter SKYACTIV-D diesel engine that is expected to develop at least 105 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 184 lb-ft of torque at 1,500-2,500 rpm. Mazda did not disclose further details, but the redesigned model will be available with two transmission options, including manual and automatic transmissions.
