The Dearborn-based automaker has plans to bring the Edge concept goes into the production line as soon as possible as a global sport utility vehicle (SUV). As we all know, the all-new 2015 Ford Edge Concept has made its impressive debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show in November last year. The Edge concept as you can see in the picture above looks more premium and offers a myriad of new advanced technologies, both for its exterior and interior.
Ford designers look really serious in designing every aspect of the company’s next-generation crossover. Although currently still in concept forms, the new 2015 Ford Edge brings some significant changes and radical redesign, both in terms of exterior and interior. The exterior design looks more assertive combined with sharp styling and more luxurious feel in every aspect. Overall, the new model carries a much better design and more premium materials compared to the current model.
The redesigned Edge crossover also presents athletic stance combined with a dynamic design styling and sporty appearance. As the global SUV product, the next generation model is destined to bring the sleek exterior design, complete with obstacle avoidance capability that is claimed as one of Ford’s future technology.
Ford introduced several new advanced technologies in the 2015 Edge concept, including automated driving technology that consists of a self-parking and obstacle avoidance systems, which is currently still in the development stage. Ford says this new advanced technology also offers benefits from the use of push-button and remote-operated parking feature. In addition, this new automated driving system is claimed to help make driving safer and more efficient.
However, the most advanced technology in the upcoming Edge is a fully-assisted parking aid that allows drivers to park their vehicles by simply touching a button and even it can also be operated via remote control. According to Ford, the development concept is based on the company’s current active park assist feature, which will utilize ultrasonic sensors to find a perpendicular parking space.
The new advanced obstacle avoidance systems will also use the same ultrasonic sensor as has been applied to a fully-assisted parking aid. Ford says that they’re refining obstacle avoidance systems. Another new technology offered by the Dearborn automaker on the Edge SUV concept is adaptive steering system, which is claimed to make the steering at low speeds become much easier.
Adaptive steering is based on Ford’s electric power-assisted steering system, which offers advantages in all conditions. In addition, the Edge concept also comes with standard safety features, including Lane-Keeping System, Blind Spot Information System, Active park assist, Adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support.
Speaking of exterior design, the 2015 Ford Edge midsize crossover featuring Copper Flame premium exterior colors and three-bar grille design with chrome plated. Headlights and taillights are now equipped with LED lighting technology, while the shape of the hood is more compact and muscular since influenced by its front grille design and sharp body lines.
In order to increase fuel efficiency, the Edge concept has been equipped with an Active Grille Shutters that automatically opens and closes the shutters to keep the EcoBoost engine always in the ideal engine temperature conditions. In addition, the Active Grille Shutters also offers benefits to maximize the vehicle’s aerodynamics.
Inside the cabin, the interior offers premium features combined with high-quality materials and elegant atmosphere. Ford says the Edge interior is designed with a high level of craftsmanship, as well as offering rich materials and elegant interior colors. Copper layer can be found in some areas as an accent color to further enhance the premium appearance, including on the carpet and instrument panel.
While the upper instrument panel, center console and door elements wrapped in Premium black Nubuck, as well as completed with elegant stitching. Distinct perforation patterns can be found on the leather seats, while the head restraint was completed with premium stitching and accent plating.
The redesigned 2015 Ford Edge is equipped with several premium interior features, which includes Leather-wrapped & hand-stitched instrument panel, unique gear shifter, 10-inch touch-screen center display with MyFord Touch and Dynamic center stack with premium mechanical switchgear. The Edge interior also showcases Scuff plate with matte black paint, bright silver plus LED-litght.
Unfortunately, Ford has not announced official specification details when the new Edge concept was introduced at the LA Auto Show in November. And they just said that the Edge production version would be equipped with next-gen EcoBoost engine and start-stop technology. However, some rumors indicate that the 2015 Ford Edge crossover will most likely use the same engine as found on the 2015 Lincoln MKC and 2015 Ford Mustang. But Ford would only take one engine from the MKC and Mustang. That means that the next-generation Edge will offer two new engine options.
The 2015 Ford Edge will most likely be powered by an all-new 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that can deliver up to 275 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 300 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. As we’ve said above, this 2.3L EcoBoost engine will be taken from the Lincoln MKC and may be available in two different setups, including standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. As we know, the 2014 Ford Edge is currently available in three different engine options that include:
3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 with 285 HP at 6,500 rpm and 253 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm
2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost with 240 HP at 5,500 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm
3.7-liter Ti-VCT V6 with 305 HP at 6,500 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm
2015 Ford Edge Release Date allegedly scheduled for later this year
Speaking about release date and price, the 2015 Ford Edge is allegedly to go on sale as a full production model towards the end of this year or early next year. However, the price tag is expected not too much different from the current model. We predict that the 2015 Ford Edge will go on sale with a price tag around $28,700, considering the current model starts at $28,100 – $39,550 and the 2013 models priced at $27,700 – $39,150. Please note that we are not a fortune teller.
