The next-gen 2015 BMW 7-Series has recently been spotted undergoing testing with heavy camouflage. As BMW’s flagship sedan, the Munich-based automobile manufacturer will allegedly provide significant design changes for the 2015 model year, both in terms of exterior and interior.
Spy shots photos appeared on the internet indicate that the 7-Series prototype looks adopt a much different design compared to the current model. According to some recent reports, this new model will likely use lightweight materials that utilize a mix of carbon fiber, aluminum and steel.
This is because the German luxury automaker has learned lightweight construction techniques while developing the new BMW i3 and i8 EV. So, we’re not surprised if the car weight will be reduced by 450 lbs, thanks to the use of very lightweight material. In addition, the lightweight carbon fiber materials may also be applied on the hood and roof of the car.
Under the hood, the 2015 BMW 7-Series sedan will come with several engine options in the U.S. and European markets, such as the new four-cylinder engine that can produce 260 horsepower. The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine will also be available for the range-topping 7-Series model when the car was launched, this V8 engine capable of spewing its maximum output up to 475 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque.
Not only that, BMW will reportedly also offer a new V6 and V12 engine, but it is certain that all the engine lineup will utilize BMW’s turbocharging and direct-injection technology. A plug-in hybrid variant will most likely be available in the future, which will be developed by BMW together with Japanese brand Toyota. So, the plug-in hybrid models will also carry Toyota hybrid technology.
Speaking of features, the 7-Series flagship sedan will reportedly be equipped with several high-tech features such as BMW ConnectedDrive system, 3D maps with real-time traffic & weather updates, new voice activation, WiFi connectivity, traffic warning safety system and self-parking features.
There’s little information we know about the release date and BMW seemed to seal details relating to the 7-Series launch schedule and sale date. However, some rumors indicate the 2015 BMW 7-Series release date is scheduled for the end of 2014 and this means that the new model will most likely arrive at U.S. dealerships in early 2015.
