The all-new 2015 Acura TLX has made its official debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, which has been successfully held this month. But as you know, this luxury sport sedan comes in prototype form during the auto show takes place at Cobo Center. Yes, this is not a full production model that will be launched in the near future but only a prototype designed to preview the upcoming TLX production model. Acura says the new model is the company’s third product in an Acura sedan lineup, which will join the RLX and ILX luxury sedan.
The Acura TLX prototype is designed with a bandage “Red Carpet Athlete” theme in order to provide athletic sport sedan combined with a luxury refinement. In terms of performance improvement, the car received tremendous support from the next-gen Acura powertrain system that works together with the latest dynamic handling technology.
Talking about the exterior design, the TLX performance-luxury sedan gets an exclusive touch from the Acura Athletic Red Pearl exterior color combined with sports sedan proportions, sharply sculpted body lines and lithe body shape. Front-end design featuring a distinctive Acura grille design and continues to offer advanced lighting thanks to the Jewel Eye LED headlights. To demonstrate its athletic stance, the prototype version rides on 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in 265/35ZR20 low-profile tires.
The TLX prototype uses the same 109.3-inch wheelbase as its siblings “Acura TL”, but the overall length is 3.8 inches shorter than the TL luxury sedan. The automaker said that the TLX design should have the most spacious interiors in the midsize luxury sedan segment and its interior space roughly almost the same as the current Acura TL, though the TLX prototype has adopted more compact exterior design than its siblings. The interior offers comfortable seating for five people and has enough cargo capacity to accommodate several items.
Under the hood, Acura offers two different engine options when the TLX production model arriving at Acura dealerships nationwide. First option, the 2015 Acura TLX will be powered by an all-new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine featuring direct-injection and the company’s i-VTEC valvetrain technology. Acura claims that the new engine is very responsive, more efficient and lighter than the other engines that even using a similar configuration.
This 2.4-liter direct-injection engine will be paired to an all-new eight-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) featuring a torque converter, which is claimed to be able to change gears very quickly, more smooth and responsive. For those looking for a high-performance sedan, Acura has offered a 3.5-liter direct-injection SOHC V6 engine which will be available with a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Unfortunately, Acura has not yet announced its performance data and fuel efficiency at this time; although they have targeted both engines will have better EPA fuel economy ratings in the midsize luxury sedan segment.
The TLX front-wheel drive model will be offered with either a 2.4-liter and 3.5-liter engine, which is specifically backed by a next-gen Acura Precision All-Wheel Steer technology. The P-AWS system has been used for the first time on the 2013 RLX sedan and is claimed to provide many advantages such as better stability at high speed, more agile handling and precise steering control.
Meanwhile, the all-wheel drive models with a 3.5-liter V6 engine will feature a Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive technology and is exclusively connected to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Acura says that the SH-AWD system is powered by a new torque-vectoring control logic and claimed 25 percent lighter. The 2015 Acura TLX offers four different driving modes that have been equipped with the Integrated Dynamics System (IDS), including ECON (Economy), Normal, Sport and New Sport+ modes.
As for safety features, Acura has installed many advanced safety features in the new TLX luxury sedan which includes Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow, Blind Spot Indicator (BSI) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).
2015 Acura TLX Release Date is scheduled for this summer
Talking about its release date, the 2015 Acura TLX is scheduled to go on sale at U.S. dealers nationwide this summer or in mid-2014, according to the automaker. However, the exact release date was not mentioned by Acura in their press release, but the production car will probably be released in the North American market around June-August.
What we know so far is that the TLX production model destined to replace the current Acura TL and TSX sports sedan, so don’t expect to see again TL and TSX models in the future. The all-new 2015 TLX Performance-Luxury Sedan will go into production line at Honda’s Marysville plant in Ohio, which is currently used to produce the 2014 Acura TL.
