The 2014 BMW i8 (Production-Ready) has been fully revealed on its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week. The i8 plug-in hybrid is completely transformed as a full production model that is expected to arrive in U.S. dealerships next spring. The starting price for the new BMW i8 is estimated around $140,000 but can go up quickly.
Under its hood, the full production model is powered by a new BMW plug-in hybrid configuration that consists of a Twin-Power 1.5-liter Turbo engine with three-cylinder gasoline configuration and uses an electric motor. The 1.5L turbo engine is paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox in order to transfer power to the rear wheels.
Maximum output of the BMW i8 engine can reach up to 231 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, while an electric motor will provide additional power to the front wheels by 131 horsepower delivered through a two-stage automatic transmission. To always be ready to support the performance of electric motors, BMW has prepared a 5 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery.
Speaking about the combined maximum output obtained from both resources, the BMW i8 sports coupe can develop up to 362 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. This makes the car can sprint from 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds, but the average fuel consumption is around 94 mpg U.S. or around 2.5-liters/100 km.
If the car only relies on electricity, so it can travel up to 22 miles with a top speed of 75 mph. While the combined output makes the i8 production-version able to complete the journey as far as 310 miles.
Regardless of the technical specifications, 20-inch alloy wheels are one of the standard equipment for the 2014 BMW i8 but also available lightweight carbon-wheels which is offered as optional.
BMW also offers several other optional features, including high-beam assistant, collision warning+pedestrian recognition, rearview camera, surround-view, head-up display and speed-limiter info.
