According to a recent report, Fuji Heavy Industries has plans to officially introduce the 2015 Subaru Outback at the Detroit Motor Show early next year. The next-gen Outback wagon recently also spotted undergoing testing in prototype form in the Europe along with the new Legacy sedan.
Outback is essentially a wagon version of the Legacy sedan, so the production version will likely get the same treatment as the sedan version. The Legacy concept has been officially introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show some time ago, and some reports indicate that the Outback will adopt some captivating changes taken from the Legacy concept.
Engine lineup will likely be the same as the Legacy production model, except the diesel engine, which reportedly will be offered in the 2015 Outback. The entry-level model will still be available with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine that can be paired to either a six-speed manual gearbox or a Lineartronic CVT. The 2.5L boxer engine can deliver up to 173 HP at 5,600 rpm and 174 lb-ft of torque at 4,100 rpm.
Apparently, the 2015 model year will also receive the same turbo engine as seen in the current Forester models. As we said above, this wagon will get some changes are almost similar to its sedan version, particularly in terms of engine specs.
The new turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer engine is expected to come up with two transmission choices include a six-speed manual and Lineartronic CVT. The new turbo engine is claimed to be able to develop up to 250 HP at 5,600 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at 2,000-4,800 rpm, as offered in the 2014 Forester.
However, a 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine may not be offered again in the new Outback wagon. Instead, Subaru will reportedly offer a new diesel-hybrid powertrain that will be taken from the 2013 Viziv Crossover Concept.
The Subaru Viziv hybrid concept has been introduced for the first time at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show in March, by presenting completely innovative and futuristic designs. The future crossover concept brings a diesel-hybrid powertrain consisting of a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine, three electric motors and a lithium-ion battery. This is what is called as the New Boxer Diesel Hybrid Powertrain and will be Subaru’s first hybrid powertrain in the near future.
2015 Subaru Outback release date is allegedly set for next June
When the car is running at low speeds, the electric motor will work to help the 2.0L turbodiesel engine to improve fuel efficiency and power. Two electric motors connected to the rear wheels and will work together with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System, while the other electric motor is paired to a CVT and diesel engines.
Talking about the exterior and interior changes, some spy shots and pictures that appear on the internet indicates that the 2015 Subaru Outback adopts a lower front spoiler design but unique, complete with smaller taillights and 18-inch alloy wheels. Meanwhile, the interior gets a few changes such as a new steering wheel with paddle shifters that look more sporty, and a new dashboard design featuring large two-gauge cluster.
The Japanese-based automaker has not yet announced its release schedule, but the 2015 Subaru Outback release date is likely to be revealed in June 2014. Some reports revealed that the new Outback wagon will hit the Detroit Motor Show in January and production will start around June. Sales are expected to begin in late 2014 or in early 2015.
